What goes wrong here

The problems this space creates

Each of these is something a fitting has to survive in this space, and each one removes some of the range.

  • Guests use one switch to turn everything on, so a fitting with a visible source at full output is noticed as soon as the room is used at night.
  • Rooms are refitted on a rolling programme, so the same fitting has to sit correctly on walls of different ages and constructions.
  • The buyer needs one specification that can be repeated across rooms without a site visit for each wall.

What the space decides before the model

These three are checked before a recommendation is made, because they cannot be changed afterwards.

Space

Wall construction varies between buildings and between refits: plaster over masonry, plasterboard on studs and tiled walls all appear in the same corridor. Corridors, bedheads, mirrors and circulation areas each carry different mounting heights.

Power

A permanent supply is available at the mounting positions because the rooms are rewired during refit, so the hardwired build is the default. The supply has to be brought to the bedhead and console positions before the wall is finished, which puts the decision in the fit-out schedule rather than in the lighting order.

Light

The light is layered: a low ambient level, wall lights that wash the wall and carry the room's character, and a brighter pool where the guest reads or looks in a mirror. The wall light is chosen to be seen when the room is used at night, and to disappear when it is not.

Selection

How to narrow the range

The guidance below is the same advice we give on an enquiry, written down so it can be checked before you ask.

Fix the mounting height against a datum that exists in every room — the head of the door, the top of the bedhead — and keep the fitting family the same across room types so that the refit can be repeated. Where the same body is available in more than one power type, the build is chosen per position rather than per project.

  • Agree the mounting height against a datum that survives the refit, not against the ceiling, because ceiling heights vary between rooms.
  • Where a cord is used, plan its route before the furniture is fixed so the cord cover can be kept straight and out of the sightline.
